★ ★ ★ ★ ★ About 4 hours drive from Vienna and you reach Hallstatt. It’s a beautiful village in the foothills of mountain Salzkammergut. Markplatz is a known marketplace in Hallstatt, that offers dining with a view of lake Hallstätter See. Must visit.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Marktplatz is the center of Hallstatt and absolutely gorgeous all year round, in summer you get to see flowers hanging out of every balcony and the water tricking down, just as beautiful in winter, white sheet of snow, gentle breeze and beautiful evening birds songs. Take a walk to the lake view point but don't forget to stop at Evangelische Pfarrkirche church, the history of this church goes back to 1785, its worth going inside, its just as beautiful from inside as it is on the outside. The small stores at the Marktplatz sell very nice souvenir and some local merchandise. I recommend taking something with you from these stores just to support the locals, a nice way of saying thank you for the hospitality.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We arrived at Hallstatt around 8.30 and parked up in the car park near the funicular and then walked 10 minutes into the town. Hallstatt is a cliched Austrian lakeside village - wooden gingerbread style houses, ornate balconies overflowing with petunias, cedarwood shingle roofs, a beautifully calm lake and stunning mountains all around. It goes without saying it was litter and graffiti free and even though a large proportion of Austrians smoke, there were almost no cigarette butts on the ground.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It was epic!!! The place itself was magnificent. There are toilets but you'll have to pay 1€. You could also hike towards the salzwelt or opt to ride the ride the train.
