A statue to commemorate the imprisonment of Richard I of England, on his return from the crusades in Durnstein Castle. Legend has it that his trusted servant Blondel sought out the location of the King by singing under the castle walls, the song he chose was one written by the King when he was on the crusade, so only the King would recognise the words and join in. In truth Duke Leopold passed Richard on to Henry VI, the Holy Roman Emporer, where he was imprisoned at Trifels Castle. Eventually a very large ransom was paid, 3 times the crowns income for a year, for the King's freedom, possibly the origin of the phrase "A Kings' Ransom".
