Twelve years ago, it was much nicer and better. In the meantime, there is hardly any caring for the maintenance of meadows near the mountain and the wishes and complaints of the residents. This is really a pity, if not soon it will change what will gasometer in a few years, always run-down look.

Not standard buildings. Once here, it seems that this is not Vienna, but some other unknown city, this industrial area is so different from the central ones. There are shops inside. A cafe. But in 2 blocks the Ibis / About forty years ago, from 1899 to 1975, these four industrial buildings were used to heat the city, they were gas reservoirs and gas was stored in them, which then entered the homes of the inhabitants of Vienna. The gas tanks used coke oven gas. In the 70s, coke oven gas was recognized as harmful to the environment due to its high carbon monoxide content and the city completely switched to natural gas, which, among other benefits, also required much smaller storage tanks. In 1984, the gas tanks were finally closed. The city of Vienna, as the owner of the buildings, was interested in the revival of these industrial architectural monuments, in 1995 a competition was announced for the best ideas for redevelopment. As a result, the idea of ​​mixed use of buildings won out, i.e. a complex of residential, office and commercial buildings, a cinema and student housing. The design of each of the gas meters was assigned to four different architects. All that was left of the former industrial plants was the brick walls and roof - all the interior was removed. The official opening of the complex took place in October 2001, but they began to be populated back in May 2001. Now they occupy about 220 thousand square meters. squares and they are home to about 1500 people, it is a kind of city within a city. The residential complex has its own name "Gasometer City", and it was originally called "G-town". Gasometer A is a project of the French architect Jean Nouvel. The building is located close to the metro line, residential apartments start at about 30m. Gasometer B is the most recognizable project of the architectural bureau Coop Himmelblau. Its feature is the leaning, as it were, a broken 18-storey building called the Shield. The 4th-5th floor is occupied by a student hostel. Gasometer C is a project of the Viennese architect Manfred Vedorn. Buildings C and D are connected by a glass passage “Skywalk”. Gasometer D - a project of the Austrian architect Wilhelm Holzbauer

Easy to reach. No matter whether by car or the "Wiener Linien"! Nice open area. The architecture is worth a visit. I would especially for "SHOPPING" do not visit the gasometer. Only if you need a few minutes.

Great concert location with good food and drink stands right in the concert hall. The balanced mix of bars and shops on site, the capacity and the acoustics, coupled with the excellent travel options make the Gasometer a fixed point in the Austrian concert landscape.
