This smaller plaza has an impressive statue of the emperor Joseph II (1741-1790) on horseback who was the son of Marie Theresa. He succeeded his father Francis I as the Holy Roman Emperor from 1765 to 1790 (his mother was not allowed to hold this title on her own) and succeeded Marie Theresa as the ruler of the Hapsburg lands from 1780 to 1790.

This is a must see for any fan of "The Third Man", but also for all tourists as well.

There is an impressive Equestrian statue of Emperor Joseph II at the small but attractive Josefplatz that can be enjoyed while touring around the Hapsburg Palace in Vienna. Emperor Joseph II reign lasted from 1764 to 1790. The monument is the works of Franz Anton Zauner in 1807 and is of the Emperor on horseback in military costume with his right hand extended forward. The statue is situated upon a base with bas reliefs on each side. The monument is surrounded by fence with four small corner pillars each with bronze seal. In the end, the Equestrian statue of Emperor Joseph II is one of a handful of equestrian monuments you can find and view in this area of Vienna. Have a look and enjoy before continuing onward with other intended sightseeing.

An impressive square containing the Austrian National Library, when planning a walking tour of central Vienna this square is well worth a visit. It is close to the Hofburg Palace and Lippizzaner Horse stables.

You should take the free walking tour with Anita. It was so much fun with her and learned lots of interesting facts about this statue and this square.
