Playground, rest area, training equipment, but not a monument! Very sad how this place is used. In fact, Vienna and Austria should think about how the place should be redesigned. So it is not a worthy memorial.

This thinking mark has to be grasped and understood. It was probably the artist's wish that the visitors take the "work" under their feet, step on it and see above that a "poem" is written there !! It's more than just a bench or a children's playground ... Perhaps interest would increase if mirrors were attached to show the design on top ?! One could ask the artist - whether he agrees or would be. Because the four "explanatory panels" are not of much use ... what a shame!

Three stars for the unsuccessful aesthetics, five stars for the significance of the monument. Thanks to Richard Wadani, whose tireless efforts we owe that there is this important memorial in Vienna.

Here on Google Maps, from a birds-eye perspective, one gets a good possibility to see the whole Memorial to the victims of persecution of the Nazi military justice by Olfa Nicolai.

“Nazi Military Justice” is an oxymoron, is it not? The monument itself is nothing impressive, but the explanatory text is worth reading, and if you are in the area (very likely as it is at the Volksgarten), go see it to contemplate for a moment or two about dissent and political opposition, and the courage it takes to join the resistence. It is also important to understand the process of a nation examining its own history. It took time, but Austria eventually saw the light.

The Memorial for the Victims of Nazi Military Justice is a relatively new monument in Vienna being inaugurated in 2014 at the corner of Volksgarten and Heldenplatz. The memorial is dedicated to the estimated 15,000 Germans and Austrians who deserted the Wehrmacht and were then executed during WWII an the Nazi reign over Austria. The memorial was designed by Olaf Nicolai and is simple three-step structure in the shape of an X. There is an information marker in the back corner of the memorial grounds, providing information regarding the memorial to those for whom it is dedicated. During our recent visit, we were able to see the Memorial for the Victims of Nazi Military Justice with a layer of snow on the ground. It had the effect of creating a more sobering atmosphere when viewing the memorial and reading about its purpose.
