★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Die Stadt Salzburg war z.T. wohl schon vor der ersten geschlossenen Ringmauer (erste Stadtbefestigung) mit Türmen und Wehrmauerabschnitten versehen. Vom Platzl flussabwärts zog sich schon eine aus dem 13. Jahrhundert stammende, aber mehrfach grundlegend erneuerte Stadtmauer, die sogenannte "Wassermauer" (abgetragen 1861) mit dem "Wassertor" nach Norden. Bis zur Zeit Paris Lodrons bildete das Tor den nordwestlichen Eckpunkt der rechtsseitigen Stadtbefestigung. Unter Paris Lodron wurde das Wassertor samt den beiden Lederertoren neu erbaut. Der salzachseitig zum Fluss auskragende neue Wasserturm erhielt ein kegelförmiges Dach. Oberhalb des Tores befand sich salzachseitig in einer Mauernische die Statue des hl. Vitalis, an andere Stelle das Lodronsche Wappen. Nächst dem Tor standen auf der einen Seite das Zoll- und auf der anderen das Mauteinnehmerhäuschen.
 The city of Salzburg was partly probably provided with towers and defensive wall sections before the first closed ring wall (first city fortification). A city wall from the 13th century, the so-called "water wall" (dismantled in 1861) with the "water gate", which has been fundamentally renewed several times, already stretched from the Platzl downstream. Until the time of Paris Lodron, the gate formed the north-western corner of the right-hand city fortifications. The water gate and the two leather gates were rebuilt under Paris Lodron. The new water tower protruding towards the river on the salt axis was given a conical roof. Above the gate, on the salt axis side, there was a statue of St. Vitalis, elsewhere the Lodron coat of arms. Near the gate stood the toll booth on one side and the toll booth on the other.
