★ ★ ★ ★ ★ My favorite place in Vienna. Quiet, beautiful, full of birds. Nature is allowed to do as it pleases on this old cemetery. (No, it's not about the fake grave monuments of famous composers.)

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Strangely enough this cemetery is almost surrounded by highways and still manages to be serene. Most graves are old, unmaintained and overgrown, but exactly that gives the place its charm. It is a bit out of the way, and the last part is no the prettiest walk. Just wonder around and do not get too excited about the Mozart grave. That is not very impressive.

The most famous grave in this cemetery is probably that of the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The City of Vienna manages the Sankt Marxer Friedhof as a publicly accessible park.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Memento Mori, at this place certainly you will. Strange, quiet, abandoned... Many czech names on tombs. Many stones are down, many graves in bad shape... Particulary in upper(south) part of cemetary I had scary feelings. Mozart's memorial is surprisingly modest but nice.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ There are several cemeteries in Vienna which are worth visiting: the Sankt Marxer is one of those. Not only because somewhere here lie the bones of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, but also for the general atmosphere of the place. Some old tombstones are of a kind of artistic value. Today the cemetery is located in a modern neighborhood between the highway and some big houses, but until the first decades of the 20th Century it was on the top of the hill in the rural outskirts of the city.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ St. Marx cemetery in the 3rd District of Vienna is a wonderful oasis within the city.
It was in use from late 18th century until 1874. It is presumed that Mozart was buried here in a mass grave, but the exact location was never identified.
The cemetery is also famous for the Biedermeier gravestones that are beautifully completed by the vegetation.
The admission is free and it is opened daily.
