Of the ancient castle of Thaur, only ruins remain. Perhaps built in the 12th century, disputed between the Tyrol and the Andechs, it was the center of an important fiefdom which also included important salt mines. It changed many owners and was heavily damaged in the 16th century during a peasant revolt. In the same century, a series of earthquakes further destroyed it. It consisted of an upper castle, of which very few remains remain, and a lower one, of which remains of walls and a fortified entrance remain. A cultural association has made it accessible and in the summer, theatrical performances take place in its courtyard. It is located in the middle of the woods, above the village and can be reached in 15/20 minutes on a pleasant walk, after leaving the car at the end of the road that starts near the village church. Admission is free

Nice destination with kids... the ruin can be entered and the remaining walls offer some scrambling.

Medieval castle ruins next to the hiking trail. Sometimes music and theater events are held there. Great view at Inn's valley. In winter I recorded there a short snowboarding film. You can find it on youtube by searching "castle snowboarding".

Fantastic medieval ruins to visit (free of charge, as long as you behave accordingly). No entrance fee, no facilities, no restaurant or whatsoever if you expect that, but a gorgeous old ruin with a breathtaking view into the inn valley. I think you can even park there in the front yard, but hiking there's nicer anyway, isn't it ;-)
