After the Roman fortress “Teriolis” was destroyed by the migration of peoples, a mansion was built on Martinsbühel in the early Middle Ages. The St. Martinsberg Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1290, when Heinrich von Aufenstein enfeoffed Ludwig von "sant Marteinsberg bei Zierlen". After the nobles von Martinsberg died out, the property fell to Meinhard II. Since that time, Sankt Martinberg has been in sovereign possession and was expanded and expanded again and again until the 18th century. When Tyrol was handed over to the Habsburgs in 1363, Margarethe Maultasch kept St. Martinsberg in addition to Ambras Castle and two castles in South Tyrol. The Habsburgs, especially Friedrich IV., Siegmund der Münzreich and Emperor Maximilian I were particularly often on St. Martinsberg to hunt there. This gave rise to the legend of "Maximilian I on the Martinswand". Emperor Maximilan had the residence expanded and even built a zoo. The castle was mostly administered by aristocratic fiefs, such as the Mentlberg family around 1450. In the 18th century, the Habsburgs lost interest in St. Martinsberg and eventually sold it to farmers.

A fortification has always existed on the site, starting from 300 AD, when a Roman fort of the III Italic Legion (Castell Teriolis) existed here, to protect the ford on the River Inn. On its remains, a medieval castle was built in the thirteenth century. It was one of the favorite bases for the hunt of Emperor Maximilian I. It then became, in more recent times, a school for the poor, an orphanage (about which dark stories are told ..), and a school. Today the chapel dedicated to San Martino and a very old tower building remain. It is private (partly abandoned) and can only be visited from the outside.
