Der Turm vereinigt sakrale und profane Funktionen für die Marktgemeinde als Wehrturm und Wachturm, als Kirch- und Glockenturm, als Stadtturm mit Turmuhr und ist das Wahrzeichen. Der Wehrturm gilt als Meisterwerk spätmittelalterlicher Festungsbaukunst (1450-1521). Unter dem Turm befindet sich eine Brunnenstube mit einem Brunnen in der Tiefe. Eine schmale Wendeltreppe führt von der Kapelle in die oberen Räume. Es gibt auch ein kleines Sakralmuseum und eine eigene archäologische Abteilung. Eintreten kann man von der Westseite. Man durchquert die sogenannte Nikolauskapelle und kann den Grabstein und die Gedenkstätte von Thomas-Ebendorfer besichtigen. Ebendorfer, genannt Thomas von Haselbach (* 10. August 1388 in Haselbach bei Stockerau, Herzogtum Österreich; † 12. Januar 1464 in Wien) war ein österreichischer Theologe, Universitätsprofessor und Geschichtsschreiber, der in Perchtoldsdorf die letzte Ruhe fand. Die 1524 eingerichtete ehemalige Türmerstube („Wachter Stübel“) wurde 1973 zu einem Ortsgeschichte-Museum ausgebaut.
