This monument stands in tribute Joseph Freiherr von Sonnenfels, an 18th and 19th century Austrian jurist, political scientist and author. Amongst his many contributions to law, he was instrumental in bringing about the abolition of torture in Austria. This monument is a stone sculpture of von Sonnenfels, dressed as a gentleman of the 18th century and wearing what appears to be a perluke on his head. He is depicted wearing typical 18th century outfit of a full-skirted knee-length coat, knee breeches, a waistcoat. The waistcoat is slightly unbuttoned and his coat is so long, he has to hold it up. Both of these show attention to detail for the folds caused by von Sonnenfels posture. The sculpture is in Rathausplatz. Don’t go out of the way unless you’re already heading to Rathausplatz. Rathausplatz contains many sculptures of prominent Austrian personalities, so you could also see them all in one visit.
