Sorry to go against the flow but my experience of this place was disconcerting. A local lad on the ski-lift told us we ''had to visit Schönwieshütte for lunch. Fabulous food, great views etc.'' To get there on skis entailed being pulled behind a snowmobile, unless you want to walk for several hours. Fine, except the vehicle was driven by a nutter. He drove it uphill faster than I ski downhill!. I was on the end of a tow-rope with seven people in front. I was swinging out, cartoon-like, on every bend. It did not feel safe. When we arrived at this off-the-beaten-track location, we were very disappointed for several reasons. Contrary to what the lad on the lift said, there was no sunny terrace to sit on. The ugly, modern building is in a valley which never sees the sun in January, at least not at lunch time. There were no tables available to sit at inside either. Despite this, the mad driver was heading back to the resort to collect even more unwitting guests. We sat at the small bar and ordered coffee to wait and see if a table became free. It did not, so I asked to pay. The barman added four Euros to our bill, for the death-defying tow behind the snow mobile. No wonder the Mad Max was so keen to bring as many people out there as possible! It felt like being scammed. Especially when I later read on their website that the ski mobile ride is supposed to be free! Also, it's not until you come to pay that that you discover they do not accept credit cards. Not a problem if you just have a coffee but more of a problem if you are paying for a family lunch. It was an expensive place and not many people carry that much cash these days. I cannot comment on the food as we did not get the chance to try any. As for service, no member of staff attempted to communicate with us as we wandered about looking for a table. The barman who served the coffee was surly and unhelpful when we asked advice on how to get back to the resort. He'd also ripped us off, remember. It seems to me that their business model is to drag (literally) unsuspecting tourists to an unappealing building, miles from anywhere and rip them off. All without a smile. In retrospect, I can't help thinking that the local lad on the ski-lift was in the employ of Schönwieshütte, to lure unsuspecting visitors there. If management are reading this: 1. Do not drag more customers there than you can seat and serve. 2. Give the Skidoo driver some hints on health and safety. 3. Get some better staff, and preferably not thieves.

Great food? Don't go for the €5,- soup. It came in seconds, because it is water with some peas.

First stop from our mountainhuttour. Hut was not yet opened that day. But they made an exception for us, so we could drink some coffee. Thanks

Great experience. You get there by ski-doo pulley from the top of the Steinmannbahn lift (call beforehand to get the ski-doo to come for you). Waiter was friendly and efficient. We had a variety of soups and all were good. The views are stunning.
