Passeggiate italiane Route (c): 19.
Passeggiate italiane Route (c): 19th century: Radetzky Johann Joseph Wendel Radetzky of Radez- (Seltschan 1766-Milano 1858) was a Bohemian nobleman and one of the most important army leaders in Austria. From 1818 to 1828 he advised Archduke Ferdinand Karl of Austria-Este. He could have retreated quietly at the age of 62; however, the unrest in northern Italy (Risorgimento) forced the Austrian government to reinstate Radetzky. Perhaps the relationship with the governor of Milan until 1830, Giulio Strassoldo, also played a decisive role: Radetzky's Friulian "wasteful" wife belonged to the same family. From 1831 to 1857 Radetzky was general commander of the Austrian army in the Lombardo-Venetian kingdom. Radetzky was famous for his victories against Piedmont Sardinia and the nationalist (Italian) insurgents supported by this kingdom (Battle of Santa Lucia near Verona, May 6, 1848; Battle of Vicenza, June 10, 1848; Custoza, July 25, 1848, Battle of Mortara, March 21, 1849, Battle of Novara, March 23, 1849). For the Milanese (and the Italians in general) he was known for cruel oppression: in late 1847 he called the siege and announced a special law-la legge stataria (= incarcerate, proceed and hang up within 2 hours after the arrest of suspects) and a series of questionable measures: on 15 February In 1847 Radetzky forbade the hats "alla calabrese", which after the Performance of Verdi's Ernani had become very popular and with the representatives of the Italian nationalist Movement were associated.
