Although everyone knows Hallstatt with its romantic, abundant flowering town and crystal clear lake, this ossuary is really interesting enough to make you forget you're in Hallstatt. It is located next to the church on the slope, behind the cemetery. It is an interesting experience for catacombs and ossuary enthusiasts. I say stop by when you go.

Very impressive, a little journey back in time. Also great view from the cemetery.

Our least favorite thing about the beautiful Hallstatt village. The ossuary room is really small and dark. € 1.50 each for entry, they give you a sheet with a short story in Italian poorly translated.

It looks like the storage of bones. There is no the quiet and sacred atmosphere as in the church. The bones were moved from the graves because the cemetery is too small and they didn't have enough places to burry the bodies. The last one was moved here in 1995. I think much more better is the ossuary in Czech Republic in Kutná Hora.

A really interesting place which is hard to see anywhere else. Recommend to visit when you’re in Hallstatt.

The ossuary is a one-of-a-kind and worth a quick visit. It's a few euros to go inside, and the room isn't very big. There is a handout, in multiple languages, explaining why and how this came to be. It was crowded, and the visit wasn't very long, but it's a popular stop while in Hallstatt. Our visit lasted about 5 minutes. It was worth it to some members of our group, and less so to others. I left rather ambivalent about it.
