Am Hor is a historic square in Vienna, right in the middle of the center of the old medieval city. It is the oldest square in the Inner Stadt and part of @UNESCO World Heritage Site. During the Roman era, a garrison was actually built on this square, which later became the residences of Babenberg dukes in the Middle Ages before Imperial Palaces was built further down south. This was the former center of power of medieval Vienna. The square itself is pretty big with the landmark statue of Mariensäule in the middle and surrounded by a few palaces. Venture into some of this and find cafes (or even hotels) in listed buildings. Behind here there are small lanes that lead to more cafes you can hang out at. Mariensäule is a statue of Mary hosted high on a column in the middle of Am Hof. It was a gesture of gratitude to the saint for saving the city from invading Swedish forces during the Thirty Year’s War. The base of the column is surrounded by cherubs, each depicting a battle with a serpent, a dragon, a lion and a basilisk.

The Mariensäule (Marian Column) is an interesting monument to see at Am Hof square. This monument was ordered by Emperor Ferdinand III at the end of the 30 year war and stands in front of Kirche Am Hof. It is a nice monument to view from up close as well as from the opposite side of the square where you can see it with the church in he background. This Marian monument was built between 1664-67 by German sculptor Balthasar Herold. It is a single black pillar, topped by a statue of the Virgin Mary. Interestingly, the decorative pillar is surrounded by four cherubs battling adversary creatures which represent heresy, hunger, plague and war. Have a look before or after visiting Kirche Am Hof when sightseeing in this area of Vienna.
