Der berühmte Pacheraltar
Meister Michael Pacher aus Bruneck in Südtirol erhielt im Jahre 1471 vom damaligen Abt Benedikt vom Kloster Mondsee den Auftrag zur Errichtung eines Altares. In zehnjähriger Arbeit schuf er zusammen mit seinem Bruder Friedrich eines der bedeutendsten spätgotischen Kunstwerke. Teils auf Wagen und teils auf Flussschiffen wurde der weltberühmte Altar nach St. Wolfgang gebracht.
Ursprünglich - so heißt es - sollte dieser Altar von Thomas Schwanthaler anstelle des Pacher-Altars aufgestellt werden, doch Meister Schwanthaler war vom Pacheraltar so begeistert, dass er seinen eigenen Altar an der jetzigen Stellen aufbauen ließ. Das Gitter rundherum bezeichnet genau die Stelle, an der die erste vom Heiligen Wolfgang erbaute Kirche gestanden hat.

The famous Pacher Altar
Master Michael Pacher from Bruneck in South Tyrol received the order to erect an altar in 1471 from the abbot Benedikt of Mondsee Monastery. In ten years of work he and his brother Friedrich created one of the most important late Gothic works of art. The world-famous altar was brought to St. Wolfgang partly on wagons and partly on river boats.
Originally - it is said - this altar was supposed to be set up by Thomas Schwanthaler instead of the Pacher altar, but Master Schwanthaler was so enthusiastic about the Pacher altar that he had his own altar built at the current location. The lattice all around marks the exact spot where the first church built by Saint Wolfgang stood.
