Historical Manufactures in Vienna XI / Headquarters of the Hofglaswarenhändler Josef and Ludwig Lobmeyr, founded in 1844. They supplied crystal chandeliers for the Hofburg, for the Schönbrunn Palace and the Bavarian royal castles. In 1882, the Redoutensäle were equipped with the first electric chandeliers in the world. The company survived the Second World War relatively unscathed, in the post-war period, orders for the chandeliers and candlesticks in the Vienna State Opera, the Theater in Luxembourg, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, for the Saudi royal court and the Sultan of Brunei were obtained. One Lobmeyr glass goes through four quality controls right through to sales, the last one being a family member: it's the small, subtle differences that make up Lobmeyr glasses and delight Lobmeyr fans around the world. "Glass is a fascinating, sophisticated material," says Leonid Rath. He leads the Viennese company in the sixth generation, together with his cousins Andreas and Johannes Rath.
