Actually a very nice, smaller hotel in the small village of Winklern. There are 2 supermarkets, 2 cafes, 2 restaurants / pizzeria and a small market square, as well as a beautiful church. There is also a cultural landscape path (nice, easy hike, about 3 hours) directly from the hotel. The hotel is partially renovated and very clean. The young man at the front desk was a bit flippant, but tried hard. The standard rooms (normal size, without balcony) are furnished with a small sofa and a table, as well as with built-in wardrobes and a bathroom with a shower cabin, without a window. Completely adequate. The room and bathroom are also very clean. However, only suitable for #normally tall people. The bed is only standard size and is very short for tall people. Also the bed linen, only standard and quite short. There are also no extras here on request. The restaurant is quite cozy and the five-course half-board menu is excellent. In quality and portion. The service is friendly and quick. The breakfast buffet is completely sufficient for the "first". Those who come later often have to be satisfied with the rest, or ask questions. In mid-September it would be nice if the heating would at least provide some warmth in the mornings and evenings, but this was not possible despite demand. There is enough parking space. Good starting point for tours / hikes around the Grossglockner ..

Many excursion options for hiking or skiing in the area: Lienz, Heiligenblut, Mölltal Glacier. Relaxation in the hotel: sauna, bright, spacious rooms, friendly service, excellent food (breakfast with regional products, 5-course dinner absolutely to be recommended). A place to take a break from everyday life. We liked it very much.

Nice hotel with great breakfast. But on a main road and noisy. Restaurant was closed so they sent us across the street to a place they recommended but was disgusting.

Not a 4-star hotel. We stayed at this hotel for a week. Unfortunately there were many points which make you doubt if you want to stay here: - Upon arrival we had to make a discussion to get a Kärnten Card (allows entrance to attractions nearby). It was clearly written that it was included in the price from 6 days, we stayed 7 days. Not good to have such unwarm welcome. In the end we got it the next day, but you shouldn’t have a discussion to get what they promise. - Breakfast is only until 09:30, even when you come at 08:30, many things are empty already. - They try to take extra money by offering water that seems for free, but has a tiny price written. A bottle of water should be simply included in a ‘4-star’ hotel. - Card payments are not possible under 50 euro, it’s 2021! Very outdated. And absolutely not worthy for a 4-star hotel that you need to make a discussion about that as well. The rooms are clean though and large. The overall maintanence state is good. The staff just doesn’t make it a pleasant place to stay. It should be marked as a 3-star hotel and it will probably will get better reviews because the service in the hotel fits better to a lower standard. We won’t stay again!

We had a 6 day stay at the Tauernstern, overall very average in terms of facilities so I don’t feel like it should be presented to guests as a 4 star stay. The sauna is one of the reasons I booked and it turned out that it was open for only 2 hours (between 15:00 and 17:00) a day. The breakfast had a few nice aspects, they had good coffee and lots of cheese/fruits. However, it didn’t matter at what time we came cause the eggs were 8/10 times missing. Which was disappointing, just like the fact that there was a tiny price on the waterbottles in the room -I hadn’t even seen it.. Water usually is free in the name of hospitality -especially in a 4 star hotel. Well, this wasn’t the case and I had to pay €10,- for water that I had in my room.. I wanted to pay with card cause I didnt carry cash at that moment, which was a problem again because the lady behind the desk said that payments are only accepted by card when the cost is over €50,-. She started calling someone and then all of a sudden I was allowed to pay with card anyway. Overall definitely not a 4 star stay in my opinion. 3 stars at best.
