Peter Hörhager zitiert in seinem Buch „Türme in Schwaz“eine historische Quelle, die besagt, dass bereits 1558 festgestellt wurde, dass er schadhaft und erschüttert sei. Ausserdem hängt er einen Meter nach Norden über. Im Jahr 1904 wurde das Läuten der großen Glocken per Erlass verboten. Dies rief den Missmut der Bevölkerung hervor und es wurden in den folgenden Jahren sogar Demonstrationen mit Kuhglocken abgehalten. 1906 wurde die Fa. Klara beauftragt, einen neuen Glockenstuhl einzubauen und man erlaubte nach Fertigstellung ein „provisorisches Läuten“. Da aber auch der neue Glockenstuhl keine Verbesserung brachte, wurde dieses am 01. April 1907 wieder eingestellt und man entschloss sich zum Bau des „Neuen Glockenturms“. Im April 1910 erfolgte dann endlich die Arbeitsvergabe und der Turm wird nach Plänen von Stadtbaumeister Franz Xaver Ruepp erbaut. Und am Tag „Maria Empfängnis“ des Jahres 1911 erklang über der Silberstadt seit langem wieder der Klang des siebenstimmigen Geläutes.
