★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Walked 2hr (for exercise) from central Vienna to this place last night arriving 8.35pm. Notice on door said kitchen was open until 9pm (place closes at 10pm).
Went in and they told me kitchen had already closed at 8pm due to lack of customers. I pointed out I'd walked 2hr (= 10km) specifically to dine in their restaurant but waitress kept repeating that the kitchen was closed.
After exiting -- I ended up going across the road to the Billa in the "gas station" for a sandwich -- I noticed that the kitchen lights were still on, the kitchen staff were still there (including chef) and that there were two big tureens of hot stew right next to the window!
So, they had a hungry customer who they knew had literally trekked across half the city to eat there, they had hot food in the kitchen, and still they preferred to turn him (and his money) away.
Sheer laziness?
I won't be back, anyway.
Moral: "traditional" Austrian kitchens often close early. Ring ahead to make sure!
