★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Stadtpalais Liechtenstein
After extensive renovation work, the Stadtpalais Liechtenstein shines in new splendour. It is considered the first important building of the High Baroque in Vienna.
The Stadtpalais Liechtenstein in the 1st district, along with the Gartenpalais in the 9th district, is owned by the Princely Family of Liechtenstein. It is located in Bankgasse in a prime inner-city location near the Ringstrasse, right next to the Burgtheater and the Volksgarten.
The two upper floors of the Stadtpalais have one of the most beautiful baroque grand staircases in Vienna. In the state rooms, baroque stucco ceilings blend harmoniously with lavish neo-Rococo interiors, original furnishings, precious silk coverings and Michael Thonet's refined parquet floors, providing a glimpse into bygone eras. Selected Biedermeier and Classicist works of art from the private art collection of the Prince von und zu Liechtenstein will be on view during guided tours of the palace.
Construction of the Liechtenstein City Palace began in 1691 on the commission of Dominik Andreas Count Kaunitz according to plans by Enrico Zuccalli. In 1694 Prince Johann Adam Andreas I of Liechtenstein had the building completed by Domenico Martinelli, who created Vienna's first monumental Baroque portal on the front side facing Bankgasse. Prince Alois II of Liechtenstein had the palace remodelled in the "Second Rococo" style from 1836 to 1847. The building was also famous in the 19th century for its technical refinements: Lift system over four floors, in-house intercom system with correspondence hoses made of rubber and silk, hot-air heating with blow-out openings artfully integrated into wall panelling. During the Second World War, bomb hits and an aeroplane that crashed into the roof caused severe damage.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful palace, one of two, owned by the princely family Lichtenstein and dates back to the late 1600s and contains artwork from the 16th-18th century. This is still an active residence, but not the portion that is on the tour. The Palace was spared from bombs that fell in vienna during WWII.
