with regard to the Sport Blachfelder Equipment hire shop beneath Hotel Austria in Niederau, overall quality of the hire gear was ok, but it is a small shop and gets chaotic when everyone arrives to hire gear at the start of the week, resulting in delays. Having more staff at busy times would help. We didn't pre book helmet hire but were strongly pushed to take them anyway - safety first etc- with no mention that they will still charge you full cost of hire at the end of the week, whether you wear them or not- slightly sneaky way of getting an additional 54 Euros out of a family of 3 .

Bought a pair of ski boots from here. Kathryn was really helpful. It's obvious that she and her husband know everything there is to know about ski-boots and skiing (think he is a world powder skiing champion). Great after care also - expanded the shell for me overnight after I experienced some toe pain. Would recommend.

My custom made shoes from Holland were hurting me very badly near the ankle and shin resulting in shooting pains on my right leg. I was recommended by my Ski school teacher Patrick to go to Kathryn and as he had said, my problems were solved. She has the expertise and the knowledge about ski shoes and that people have different shapes of legs and that one size does not fit all. Kathryn understood my problem and with custom made insoles and adjustment to the shoes, skiing is now pain free. Thank you for the excellent service and attention ! ??? You now have a loyal customer ?

Had ski shoes custom made a few years ago for a high price. I felt the ski shoes were too small. Have been coming back for several years to adjust them from the inside where possible. Still in a lot of pain, but they said it was the right size... I decided to buy new ones somewhere else. The shop I then went to had many clients which complained about the same problem with Blachfelder. They sell in sizes for racing (one size too small is then perfect) but not for an amateur skier on holiday. I don't recommend you to buy here.

This is a review of the ski hire shop located below the Hotel Austria and not the ski equipment shop with the same name at street level. This is worth emphasizing as the street level shop is shown as being closed on Sundays - whereas the ski hire shop, crucially to any skiers arriving late on a Saturday, is open on Sundays. I hired standard skis for two weeks and collected them the afternoon before without any fuss or hard sell on insurance or upgrades - very refreshing. The whole transaction was concluded quickly and efficiently but it was at a quiet time so I can't say how they cope with a crowd as it is quite small. However, the fact that there was minimal paperwork suggests that they will get through people quite quickly. My skis had been booked through Crystal Ski Holidays and no voucher was given or required - they already knew about me and what I was hiring. I was given the ski length I requested and the bindings were set to the settings I prefer with minimal resistance. The skis I received appeared to be brand new and I had no problems with them at all - I skied as well with them as I have ever done. When I first collected them I was offered the opportunity to change them as often as I liked so I decided to change them at the end of the first week. The replacements were visibly used but still performed perfectly. I didn't know that I had actually been given an upgrade - but then I have never been able to distinguish any difference between top end skis and economy ones which is why I always now go for the cheapest. There was no charge for this upgrade but I don't think you can rely on that - after all this was a very quiet time for them in the resort. Dropping the skis off at the end was equally efficient with no surprise charges or scrutiny of the return condition.
