Erster Raum mit Brettspielen (Schach und Backgammon), leider wenig ausgestellte Auswahl (möglicherweise bereits viel verkauft wegen nahendem Weihnachtsfest) und keine Preise angeschrieben. Im zweiten Raum findet sich hauptsächlich Literatur. Mein Eindruck: Literatur und Beratung scheint vorrangig zu sein; aber vielleicht täuscht der kurze Eindruck auch. Quaint little shop. First room with board games (chess and backgammon), unfortunately little exhibited selection (possibly already a lot sold due to the approaching Christmas) and no prices written. The second room mainly contains literature. My impression: literature and advice seem to be paramount; but perhaps the brief impression is also deceptive.

Nicht zu viel erwarten von dem Erscheinungsbild des Geschäfts, es ist nicht modern, aber man wird ziemlich sicher das bekommen wonach man sucht. Sehr zu empfehlen! Medium-sized shop with a very nice owner who likes to take a little more time for his customers and sometimes even plays a game of chess ? Und leider hatte es auch an einem Freitag um 15 Uhr nicht pünktlich geöffnet, so dass ich das Erste mal vor verschlossener Tür stand. Schön und einladend ist das Geschäft nicht. Eher könnte man von außen meinen, das es dauerhaft geschlossen ist oder bald schließen wird. Ich bin absoluter Schachlaie. Demzufolge hatte ich nachfragen. Erst einmal musste ich 2x auf mich aufmerksam machen, bis der Herr von seinem Schreibtisch im Hinterzimmer hervorkam. Und seine Art war wirklich merkwürdig. Ich glaube, man geht hier nur von Kundschaft aus, die ein absolutes Fachwissen besitzen. Auf meine Fragen reagierte er angewidert und desinteressiert. Danke für nichts. Ich komme nicht mehr wieder und werde mich woanders informieren und ganz einfach online bestellen. Ich war gewillt bei den kleinen lokalen Geschäften etwas zu kaufen. Aber sorry.. wenn du keinen Bock hast, dann lass es. The store doesn't exactly have the friendliest opening times right now. And unfortunately it wasn't open on time at 3 p.m. on a Friday, so that was the first time I stood in front of a locked door. The business is neither beautiful nor inviting. Rather, one could think from the outside that it is permanently closed or that it will close soon. I am an absolute chess layman. So I had to ask. First of all, I had to draw attention to myself twice until the gentleman came out of his desk in the back room. And his manner was really strange. I think that one only assumes customers who have absolute specialist knowledge. He reacted to my questions with disgust and disinterest. Thanks for nothing. I will not come back and will find out more and easily order online. I was willing to buy something from the small local shops. But sorry .. if you don't feel like it, don't do it.

Im Gegenteil: Hier erwartet einen das Flair der Schachmeister, die Geschichte des Schach-Wien, viel Schach-Kultur, aber auch Modernes wie die neuesten Schachbuch-Erscheinungen, und vor allem: das ungeheure und ans Unglaubliche grenzende Wissen des Inhabers. Man muss sich ein bisschen Zeit nehmen, aber es lohnt sich, in eine Welt mit nahezu unerschöpflichem Tiefgang einzutauchen, und zu schachlich Gängigem und Ausgefallenem fündig zu werden. Anyone expecting "easy-going-super-hip-I'm-the-biggest-and-we-have-only-the-best-sale!-sale!-sale!" flair here will be disappointed. On the contrary: Here you can expect the flair of the chess masters, the history of Chess Vienna, a lot of chess culture, but also modern things like the latest chess book releases, and above all: the enormous knowledge of the owner, bordering on the unbelievable. You have to take a bit of time, but it's worth immersing yourself in a world with almost inexhaustible depth and finding something chess-related and unusual.

The shop contains many sets for sale, all mysteriously of better quality and yet still cheaper than other places in town. The back room has a library of books for sale - half english / half german. Enough material for a lifetime of study. The owner Herr Ehn speaks great english, is always helpful and ready to order what you need should he not have it, and also ready to serve humble pie over the board should you confuse yourself into thinking you have nothing left to learn. Also contains Go sets, the newest computer software etc. Dont be a fool and take your business anywhere else.
