★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Rotmoosjoch (Redmoss Notch) is a notch in the mountain range where you can cross from Austria to Italy only in peak summer.
There is a unmarked trail you can follow using GPS from the Ratmoosferner trail to the Ratmoosjoch, it exists as a dotted trail on some maps. Note: a dotted trail means a mountaineering trail, which requires free rock climbing.
We went there in late June 2018 and found that climbing to the ridge required snow shoes (slope > 70 degrees) due to deep unpacked snow.
Locals said is recommended to cross there only in July or August, and only with a Bergfahrer (mountaineer). The snow and rock slides underneath the snow are unstable. Once you get up to the ridge (at the GPS location of the notch) you will find the ridge does not appear to have existing rock climbing attachments to clip into.
