Die Welser Bevölkerung glaubte noch im 18. Jhdt., dass es sich bei diesem Ehepaar um ein mittelalterliches handle, welches unzertrennt die Pest überlebt habe. Der Stadtpfarrer Felix von Froschauer (gest. 1810), der sich damals schon mit der antiken Vergangenheit der Stadt Wels genauer befasste, räumte mit dieser Legende jedoch auf, da er das Relief eindeutig als römisch erkannte.
