We would have liked to see the other two floors, but "the guided tour is only in German" didn't help anyone. You're losing a lot of money this way.

A must must visit for anyone who is interested in anatomy, pathology, preservation of old organs and parts and learning about old procedures. Context of my visit (June 2019): It's surprisingly not-popular even in Vienna itself. At least if you refer to Narrenturm and ask for directions (which is what I did). There was a snafu with my phone that ended with me being kind of clueless on my first day in Vienna, trying to make my way here. The museum was scheduled to close at 1 pm and so I had to rush to make my way there and I found it after a lot of wrong turns and asking many people (to no avail). The museum was sort of a dream to visit. I remember at least at that period in time there were a couple of scheduled English walks i.e. walks where the guide would explain the exhibits to you in English. I wasn't in time for that and so had to rush through before the museum closed and read the exhibits to the beat of my ability. If I remember correctly, all the exhibits were in German. The architecture of the building added to the sense of macabre in my opinion. The cells and dungeon shaped places and old tables were patients were strapped once all added to the horror of the place. To imagine that this was the seat of mental-health "treatment" in Vienna once was quite a sobering and chilling realization. Given that my phone was not functional, I couldn't take any photos. But it was an impactful visit and I would recommend it to whoever is interested. Again if I recall correctly, ticket was cheap. About 2 Euro.

Very beautifully done. Each specimen is well explained and a nice history on pathology is given. Going through the ground floor and the tour is a bit too much. I would advise doing one or the other.

I've been there twice: First two years ago, and the second time a few weeks ago. Both times I really enjoyed it! It might not be for the faint-hearted, anatomy isn't always pretty. But you can learn a lot about the place itself and about the different exhibits, everything you see has a written description and it is truly fascinating. If you have the chance you should take the guided tour! If I remember correctly we had a medicine student show us a lot more exhibits and explaining everything to our group, which is definitely worth the money!
