Das Kraftwerk mit einer Jahreserzeugung von 335.123 MWh wurde 1974 in Betrieb genommen. Über eine Länge von 500 Meter verbindet die Fischwanderhilfe den Wasserlauf der natürlichen Drau im Bereich der Wehranlage St. Martin mit dem 16,9 m höher liegenden Oberwasserkanal des Kraftwerks und ist als längste technische Umgehungsstrecke in Kärnten eine technische und ökologische Meisterleistung. Sie besteht insgesamt aus 130 Pools und 17 Ruhe- und Laichzonen. Durch spezielle Schlitze in den Pools wird die Wasserbewegung konstant ruhig gehalten und die Strömung s-förmig gelenkt. Dies entspricht dem Druckverhalten natürlicher Gewässer. Ausgerichtet ist die Wanderhilfe für die in diesem Abschnitt nachgewiesenen Fischarten der Drau. Eine der wichtigsten davon ist der Huchen, der mit einer Länge von bis zu einem Meter die größenbestimmende Fischart ist. Aber auch Seeforellen, Nasen und Barben nutzen den Aufstieg, um in ihre Laichhabitate zu gelangen. Der Untergrund im Fischaufstieg ist auch ein wertvoller Lebensraum für Mikroorganismen und Kleinstlebewesen wie Larven und Fischnährtiere - daher sprechen Experten oft auch von einem Migrationskorridor.
