Hotel Sonnschein

This is rated in Austria as 4* but certainly not by our standards. The rooms are very spacious with twin beds pushed together and space for a sofa and desk and lots of storage. Absolutely awful foam pillows provided but luckily we brought our own. There was a huge balcony with wonderful views of the surrounding countryside and mountains. Included for free are a safe, mini fridge and Wi-Fi which all worked well. The kettle in the room had no safety switch or tea/coffee but these are available along with numerous others essential items from Reception at extra cost. Both outdoor and indoor swimming pools were lovely and free to use but again towels cost extra. The towels provided in the room were poor quality and too small. The shower was above the bath and worked fine, however drain was blocked so the bath fills up as you use it. We stayed for 8 nights on a coach tour an a HB basis and were very disappointed with the kitchen. Breakfast is Continental only with over-cooked eggs but no sign of bacon or sausages. Evening meals were boring and repetitive. A soup followed by 2 choices of meat and a vegetarian dish. The same buffet salad with pickled vegetables was offered every night with some stale bread. Drinks are over-priced with Supermarket wines at €26 or more and bottled water at €4.50 Lovely location with some delightful country walks nearby and of course perfect for the skier. Unfortunately the hotel does not try hard enough to satisfy its guests and is poorly maintained so nowhere near a 4* standard.

A very nice place to stay. Clean and well looked after. A good selection of food choices in the evening and a lovely breakfast with lots of choice too. Staff are friendly and very helpful. Pool is nice and there's also a steam room with showers. My partner had a massage which she said was very good.

I found the Sonnschien to be a nice hotel with lovely views and generally friendly staff. After reading various reviews, especially about the food I was worried what we would find. Actually the food was fine - it was certainly not fine dining, but I wouldn't have expected that. What it is is a fixed menu, with three options for your main, one of which was a vegetarian option. Food was of acceptable quality and in the main tasty - there was only one night out of nine where I didn't enjoy the food - I think considering they were serving 200 guests+ arriving within an hour of each other - then you have to accept that it all cannot be freshly made, unless the kitchen staff are increased massively and the cost of stopping also goes up massively. The room I was in was comfortable and the bathroom was clean and neat. Bed took a bit of getting used to but was very comfortable for me, there was a balcony for sitting out and taking in the views. It was, all in all a very relaxing stay. The only minor annoyance was the lack of tea and coffee! Kettle and cup was there, but nothing to brew with. Cost of 8€ is a tad extortionate for teabags. Take your own if you like a cuppa.

This is the 2nd time I've been to this hotel and I've also visited their sister hotel up the road. Both are a collection, great value for money, all very friendly and attentive staff and the food and service is off a high standard. The rooms are big, clean and comfortable and the pool area is very relaxing. Thanks for such a great stay, if I come back to Niederau I'll be back to this hotel

Brilliant hotel, superb staff and the dining is out of this world!!

Just had a week at the Sonnshein and really enjoyed it. Great staff good food and large tidy room. This was topped off with lots of sunshine and great snow. We will be back ??

Had a great week at the Hotel Sonnschein it's our 4th time staying here. Food good with 4 cources and good choices for breakfast. The pancakes were a great hit! Short walk to the nursery slopes which then takes you over to the main gondola.

Reading the reviews we weren't quite sure what to expect but it was part of a ski-deal. But would actually recommend if you're looking for healthy wholesome Austrian based hospitality and food. Generally not so 1/2 or full board.... but reception was efficient; staff generally sociable; rooms very clean and a perfect private place to relax ( beds were made every day in a different style! Nice touch! TV has typical alpine reception but reading kept us happy). We had great Balcony view of slopes! And at one point had a problem with the hot water- not hot! (Sorted straight away). Then food- salad/ breads emptied due to influx of additional guests! (Sorted straight away). We enjoyed feeling like we was in Austria due to the traditional gastrostomy and clothing worn by staff. Hotel has other features, not even sampled- sauna, steam room, pool etc) Would I visit again- yes for skiing! Can't vouch for summer but we spoke to a number of repeat returners both winter and summer.
