Der Diminutiv zum spätlateinischen cappa → la (Art der Kopfbedeckung, Mantel mit Kapuze) bezeichnete um das Jahr 660 herum den als etwas Heiliges verehrten Mantelrest von Martin von Tours, über welchem die fränkischen Könige einen Raum zum Beten errichtet hatten.
