An amazing find. Walking down Rennweg, past the Belvedere palaces, we stumbled upon this amazing military monument. Stunning, and cooling, as it was a very hot day and the spray from the fountain gave us some sweet relief. A great place to kick off an informal walking walking tour of Vienna.

Beautiful and majestic place. This is a monument to the soldiers who died during the liberation of Austria from the Nazis. The monument was built in 1945, and still retains its beauty.

Interesting place for pictures. I guess it is best to visited it at summer, because the fountain is quite big and splashes water around.

Recommended by our hotel and well worth the wander out. Crowded with local Viennese and full of life, so a good place to have a relax after a day's sightseeing.

Hochstrahlbrunnen is a fairly large circular fountain, but with a rather simple design. I cam out here to Schwarzenbergplatz to see the Soviet War memorial and saw the fountain as well. I wasn't all that impressed. I was told that there's a light show at sunset, but I didn't see that either and the sun had definitely set.

Beautiful square in the middle of Vienna city. You may sit on the bench and have a 360 degree view of the city traffic. Buildings around are all built in old European style that you'll love.

The Schwarzenbergplatz is one of the most important squares in central Vienna. One prominent feature of the square is the Hochstrahlbrunnen, a large fountain that looks like a geyser with pseudo-natural rocks in a circular pool. Sandwiched between the Palais Schwarzenberg and the Hochstrahlbrunnen, you find the Soviet memorial "Heldendenkmal der Roten Armee" - its shape and array corresponds with both, Palais and fountain. However, the Hochstrahlbrunnen is much older. It was built to celebrate the construction of the first water pipeline from the Styrian alps to Vienna in 1873. In the decades before, the water supplies from various springs in the Vienna Woods and through the Wien River had proved to be insufficient for the ever-increasing population of Vienna.
