Der Weg durch den Wald bis zur Ruine ist aber, wenn auch immer ansteigend, schön und ruhig. Unfortunately, there are only a few remains of the ruins. Only a few overgrown rocks give an idea of a castle. The path through the forest to the ruin is nice and quiet, even if it is always uphill.

Die spärlichen Überreste der ehemaligen Wehranlage erreicht man, wenn man vom Ort Neußerling zum Bauernhof Buchholz 45 fährt und den dort in den Wald führenden Weg immer geradeaus folgt. Nach rund 700 m stößt man auf die im dichten Unterholz verborgenen und stark überwucherten Ruinenreste Die Burg wurde um 1136 errichtet und Ende des 13. Jahrhunderts wurde Rotenfels durch die neue, wesentlich größere Burg Waxenberg oberhalb des gleichnamigen Ortes ersetzt und die Burg alsbald dem Verfall preisegegeben. Heute zeugen nur mehr Mauerreste von der einstigen herrschaftlichen Anlage The Rotenfels castle ruins, also known as Alt-Waxenberg or high-rise, are the ruins of a hilltop castle near Herzogsdorf in the Mühlviertel / Upper Austria. The sparse remains of the former weir system can be reached by driving from Neußerling to the Buchholz farm 45 and following the path that leads straight into the forest. After about 700 m you come across the remains of ruins, hidden in the thick undergrowth and heavily overgrown.The castle was built around 1136 and at the end of the 13th century Rotenfels was replaced by the new, much larger Waxenberg castle above the town of the same name and the castle was soon abandoned to decay .
