From the large car park at the end of the road we can already admire the unbreakable large concrete wall of the dam, the unrealistically green-blue water mirror of the reservoir, the Kölnbrein Stausee. The modern barrel-like building on the hillside is the Berghotel Malta, which houses the 4-star mountain hostel, an elegant restaurant, a small collection of mountain crystals and a multimedia exhibition about the hydropower plant and the world of energy. Among the attractions, the palm is naturally taken away by the dam and the natural environment. You can walk along the 8 m wide dam in the middle of the 626 m long structure, above the 200 m deep the glass-floored AirWalk panoramic lookout has been designed, which offers an unusual experience for the brave hikers. From the dam you can see the lower reservoir, the Galgenbichl and the three thousand, snow-capped mountain peaks surrounding the valley for most of the year. Those who are more curious can also go inside the dam as part of a guided group tour where they can learn interesting things about the operation of the hydropower plant. The Kölnbrein Stausee and its surroundings are towered by a beautiful, majestic, imposing mountain world all around, glaciers and peaks reflected in the water of the reservoir. From the dam you should walk along the eastern bank of the reservoir to the cozy restaurant Kölnbreinstüberl in wonderful alpine surroundings. More comfortable ones can also travel by car on the stony road running along the lake. From here you can take longer tours of the area, a popular destination is the relatively easily accessible Osnabrücker Hütte (2022 m), which is not far from the western end of the reservoir.
