★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Die Befestigung der Stadt Salzburg sicherte über Jahrhunderte die Stadt und ihre Bewohner. Beiderseits der Salzach führte seit der Zeit der ersten Stadtbefestigung ein geschlossener Ring von Mauern (teilweise auch senkrecht behauene Felsen) um die heutige Altstadt, die auch die Festung Hohensalzburg mit einschlossen, der erst 1860 seine wehrhafte Bedeutung verlor und wenige Jahre später weitgehend abgerissen wurde.
 The fortifications of the city of Salzburg secured the city and its inhabitants for centuries. On both sides of the Salzach, a closed ring of walls (partly also vertically hewn rocks) led around today's old town, which also included the fortress Hohensalzburg, which only lost its defensive importance in 1860 and was largely demolished a few years later.
