My worst hotel experience so far. After being made to loiter around for an hour in the sun with an 11 month old baby, waiting for our expensive room "to be made ready" at 2pm, they let us in, and we marvelled at the high ceilings and huge window, a little less at the somewhat narrow bed and definitely not at the bathroom / toilet which was only separated from the room by a glass partition, meaning that you were privy to whatever happened inside, if not visually, then at least audibly. However, the room did have an amazing balcony. So we went out on the balcony, and promptly noted – lucky for us! – that there is a gap of at least 20 cm between the bottom of the wooden railing and the wooden boards of the balcony, more than enough for a small child to roll under and fall off. We therefore decided to keep a close watch over our baby when he was on the balcony. We reasoned that such a blatant danger might have been kept as part of the design, in order not to alter the old building. So we watched closely as our baby crawled around happily on the balcony, playing with a toy, far from the dangerous edges. Little did we realise that something bad was happening to him, under our very eyes. When we went back into the room, we saw that he had a series of black spots on his feet, knees and wrists. We then realised that these were wood splinters, that the child had picked up from crawling over the boards of the balcony. There were 20-30 of them altogether. We tried to get them out of his skin, but the poor baby was screaming. We went downstairs to the reception desk and they said “oh, it’s nothing, just use a needle to get them out”. We called a doctor, but they couldn’t help. We went to the local pharmacy and spent 54 euros on salves and equipment to try to remove the splinters as painlessly as possible. Upon returning to the hotel, I asked to speak to the manageress. I expressed my shock at what had happened to my baby son. She said there was a sign posted on a notice board advising people to wear flip-flops when walking on the balconies (this it turned out, was not true: there was only a sign advising people to wear flip-flops when walking on the boardwalk at the hotel’s beach). Then I told her that I didn’t know about this, and why hadn’t it been pointed out to us? She replied that there were many dangers at the hotel, but if they had to point out each and every one of them, it “would fill half their web site”. What other dangers are you referring to? I asked her, being rather concerned. She replied: “listen, our rooms are in great demand. We like people who stay here to be happy. If you’re not happy, then leave. In fact, you should leave right away.” I replied that I thought this was a disgraceful way to treat customers but that I would comply. However, I asked whether my partner and child could remain for one night, given that they had just spent 5-6 hours getting here and were exhausted. She consented to this. I went to inform my partner, who was so exhausted, that she elected to remain at the hotel regardless and went to plead with the manageress to let her stay with the baby. As for me, I packed my things and left for home, returning every day to be with my people (an 8 hour round trip). Our holiday was utterly ruined. The baby continued to suffer for weeks afterwards. This was the most shoddy treatment that I ever experienced from any hotel. So if the snazzy photographs strike your fancy, beware of the hidden dangers, and keep your fingers crossed that nothing might go wrong, because these people will give you short shrift.

Lovely view from our houseboat room. Convenient location. Friendly staff. Be sure to bring your own toiletries (it's bare bones) and converters especially if travelling from the US.

This hotel was stealing my time and my weekend. Very unreliable management and reception!!!!! We were booking a room from Astoria Hotel and driving 3 hours from Vienna and they were telling us that one of the customers has decided to stay longer so they can’t give us a room!!!! What would you say after this? Who has a right to behave like that???? If you care your soul, time and weekends DON’T go there! Little town’s small behavior!!!
