In the outer courtyard of the castle there is a large bell that can be rung with the clapper. To visit the church you have to climb up to the top of the tower on a wooden spiral staircase.

Born as a protection and control tower for travelers in 1361, it had the addition of another housing part about 100 years later. The 2 superimposed chapels, which can be accessed from the tower, are interesting. The upper one with a baroque altar dedicated to the Madonna and the lower one dedicated to the Holy Cross. A legend tells that the statue of the Madonna magically returned to its place, whenever someone tried to take it elsewhere. The castle is now inhabited by religious but the tower and chapels can be visited. In the nearby Hotel Mariasteinerhof, by booking, you can visit a museum with many interesting things, including the scepter and the Tyrolean crown.

The castle with its impressive defense tower is quite interesting but its main attraction is the pilgrimage site that has been installed in the uppermost levels of the tower, with two chapels, one above the other. Lower levels also have some interesting rooms with folkloristic exhibits.
