Die Burg wurde Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts über der Scharflingerhöhe errichtet, In der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhundert wurde das Schloss Hüttenstein erbaut. Damals dürfte die Burg dem Verfall preisgegeben worden sein. Auch das Schloss drohte 1794 bereits einzustürzen und man beschloss seinen Abbruch. Die verbliebene Schlossruine wurde 1811 versteigert und 1843 begann man die Ruine im Stil der englischen Tudor-Gotik in ein wohnliches Schloss zu verwandeln. Von der ehmaligen Veste Hüttenstein sind heute jedoch nur mehr geringe Reste erhalten.
