Sie war im Mittelalter und der frühen Neuzeit eine Marienwallfahrtskirche. 1686 wurde die Pfarrei Altenmarkt errichtet, die Kirche dürfte in dieser Zeit umgewidmet worden sein.
Die Parre ist heute dem Souveränen Malteser Ritter Orden inkorporierte.
The church was built after 1234, this year the village Altenmarkt was given to the Johanites. The church was initially called Maria in the Au. It was a Marian pilgrimage church in the Middle Ages and early modern times. In 1686, the parish Altenmarkt was built, the church was probably rededicated at this time.
The parre is now incorporated into the Sovereign Order of Malta Knights.
