I did participate in a project together with Sarah Zala. Well, to be brief, it was a mistake and a waste of time. Sarah did not seem knowledgeable about the subject. I pointed out several times that the results we would obtain in the research project would be invalid and barely useable. Unfortunately she did not care about that. Therefore our whole project turned out to be a failure and much of my time wasted, not so much hers. I did talk to some of the people working in the facility and it turns out Sarah got the position as a by product of Dustin Penn, her husband. The academy hired Dustin and he insisted on his wife Sarah also getting a position. In case of Sarah it is also pretty convenient to marry your PhD advisor, very clever, at least as far as career planing is concerned. In case of the academy the question is: How can you get good people when you hire based on nepotism? Well, this proofs again in research you need people with foresight and creativity, if people lack these characteristics it turns out disastrous.

Mission Statement from the KLIVV Webpage: Our goals are to investigate and advance scientific understanding about the biology of animal behavior and transfer this knowledge through scholarly publication. As an institute for ethology (behavioral biology), we study animals in natural or seminatural conditions, as well as the laboratory, and address questions regarding proximate mechanisms and evolution. We study a diversity of species, and utilize a variety of methods and techniques, including molecular genetic tools. We provide opportunities for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows to receive training and collaborate on research. Cooperation with schools and other interested groups offer possibilities for long-term studies. Finally, we aim to apply insights from our research to better understand the behavior of our own species and to address applied problems, particularly for conservation and the environment.

I would like to suggest taking part in projects from the Konrad Lorenz Institute of Ethology in Wilhelminenberg, University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna. There are many opportunities for students and researchers to collaborate on different research projects, using different techniques and improving their skills and knowledge. I worked at KLIVV and took part in many experiments regarding bioacoustics and animal behavior with the supervision of doctor Sarah Zala and professor Dustin Penn. I learned a lot about different approaches to a correct experimental design, avoiding the traps of pseudoreplication, how to correctly perform experiments, and learning how to present my data in a meaningful way. I found at KLIVV and in our research group friends and valuable colleagues. It was an incredible experience for me working and studying there and an important opportunity to professionally and personally grow.

I conducted my PhD at the Konrad Lorenz Institute of Behavioural Ecology. It is a fantastic place to study and to learn how to perform research. KLIVV has great research facilities and is a hotspot of highly motivated, bright and international people. I can fully recommend studying and working in such a flourishing environment. I further want to reply to an old critique addressing one of KLIVV’s scientists. I feel obliged to reply, since this critique was obviously posted to damage the reputation of a female colleague. I have known Sarah Zala for more than 10 years and she is an extremely dedicated scientist. She is passionate about her work, she thoroughly plans and conducts her studies, engages openly in discussions and is clearly a role model for students and young scientists.
