Jenbach station is a especial attraction, as is the only Austrian station where there are railway lines with three different gauges: 1,435 mm (normal railway line of the ÖBB, the national railway company), 1,000 mm (Achensee Railway) and 760 mm (Zillertal Railway). The Zillertal is connected at Jenbach, via the Zillertalbahn, with the ÖBB main line. On the Zillertalbahn, there are not only regional trains but also regular steam-hauled special trains, which represent a great attraction, especially for us tourists. I recommend a ride on the two latter ones, as the Achensee Railway is one of the oldest steam cog railways worldwide. The Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria had this railway built, overcoming the 7 km long track from Jenbach to Lake Achensee within 45 minutes. Also the Zillertalbahn Railway is a steam train that runs the 32 km from Jenbach to Mayrhofen in the Zillertal valley. During this trip you can enjoy beautiful scenery and traditional music. You might have to put up with some smoke from the engine, depending on the season and also where you sit. At Mayrhofen you can get a return ticket, or go on enjoying that beutiful city.
