Mauthausen è un paese bellissimo, nonostante i campi di concentramento che ospitava: oltre al famoso e omonimo campo che tutti conosciamo, ce n'erano altri ancora più atroci dove i deportati venivano fatti lavorare fino alla morte. Addirittura, tutta una collina era stata scavata per farne una fabbrica nascosta di aerei bellici, e qui era stato prodotto il prototipo di un aereo formidabile che veniva considerato tecnicamente superiore a quelli britannici e americani: quando lo proposero a Hitler, questi rifiutò di avviarne la produzione perché non voleva che aerei prodotti fuori dalla Germania sorvolassero Berlino, nonostante l'Austria fosse storicamente alleata. La produzione fu comunque avviata in segreto dai gerarchi nazisti, consapevoli della brutta piega che stava prendendo per loro la guerra, ma a causa del divieto di Hitler la produzione fu troppo lenta e riuscirono a produrre solo 6 aerei prima dell'arrivo dei Russi.
