The Wietzen artists' garden shows around 50 stone sculptures by the sculptor Alfred Kurz, who died in 2015 and a former student of Fritz Wotruba, in a green setting. There are versatile objects from three decades of humans and animals that represent the creative power of the artist. They are figures that allow the real in abstractly simplified expression in the design. In the farmhouse where Kurz lived and worked, he also earned his living as a farmer, you can also see wooden sculptures and other works. At the age of twelve he was already carving a Christmas crib with miniature figures. For him, art was a calling that came close to his sensitive nature. The reclining figure, which has a functional meaning as a gargoyle, seems impressive to me.

Is in a "Sleeping Beauty", yet very interesting and worth seeing. Unfortunately, there is not much to learn about the artist who died in 2015, only a small information board and an even smaller folder can be found. The artist garden with its sculptures is very impressive. A visit is highly recommended for any art lover.

Worth a stop! Alfred Kurz was a remarkable artist and an interesting man. I had the pleasure running into his sister while visiting this garden in Wietzen, full of sculptures. Alfred was the son of a simple farmer. His talent for wood carving and drawing revealed itself while he was quite young. Soon he left Wietzen for Vienna where he studied at the art academy under professor Wotruba. But Alfred was not made for the big city. He missed the farm and returned frequently. When his father died, he returned for good. His teachers and mentors urged him to continue his studies and to chose a profession in arts. But Alfred Kurz stayed in Wietzen. The garden today displays parts of his artistic output between harvest and planting, between rearing of animals and bedtime. Alfred Kurz withdrew from the world as he grew older and even refused to sell his work. That's a shame but it's also the reason why this garden exists in its current form.
