Outside of Burggarten, on the corner of the streets of Ringstraße and Götegasse is a monument to Goethe. It was opened in 1900. Note that although in Vienna itself a great musician has never been, nevertheless here he is loved and honored. With the creation of the monument itself there are many disputes and troubles. It is known that the collection of money for the monument to Goethe lasted several years. However, the committee to which this responsible mission was entrusted managed to squander two-thirds of the necessary amount. After lengthy proceedings in 1889, a competition was announced for the project of a monument among sculptors. A year later, among the numerous works submitted to the committee, two possible options were chosen: the works of the sculptors Victor Tilgner and Edmund Hellmer. Three years after the finalization, the projects were again submitted for consideration. One project was rejected for technical reasons, and the second was approved only after the scandal caused by public discontent. So, after so many twists and turns, we can see a bronze figure of a great composer rising on a high pedestal, whose work is known all over the world. Hellmer portrayed the creator sitting in a spacious armchair, with a tired, pensive and long-sighted gaze.

Monument Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was opened on December 15, 1900, Edmung von Hellmer was an Austrian sculptor who designed this. A beautiful figure, unfortunately a very unspectacular monument, for this German poet and natural scientist.

Just outside the Burggarten Gate along Goethegasse and the opernring section of the Ringstrasse is a monument to the German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. This monument is the work of Austrian sculptor Edmund von Hellmer and was unveiled in 1900. It is a large scale bronze statue of Goethe, depicted as a middle aged and heavy set individual. He is in coat and seated in a large chair. The statue rests upon a granite pedestal, shaped in a similar manner to the outline of the statue. You can see the Goethe Monument before or after visiting Burggarten or when passing along the ringstrasse. There are quite a few other monuments to view in the area as well.

This monument stands (or sits) in tribute to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the 18th and 19th century German poet and writer. Amongst his many important works, his magnum opus and renown novel “Faust” is one of the greatest works of world literature. The monument is a larger than life bronze sculpture of a sitting Goethe. Goethe is depicted seated comfortably with his arms resting on the armrests of the chair. He looks straight ahead and assured. The monument is located just outside the eastern entrance into Burggarten in the main tourist circuit of Vienna. It’s not a particularly outstanding sculpture, but worth a quick detour if you’re in the area.
